Peters passes landmark legislation to protect children from lead poisoning

SAN DIEGO – Council President Scott Peters led the City Council to pass legislation to protect San Diego children from the harmful affects of lead poisoning. According to the Environmental Health Coalition, every month in San Diego 100 children are exposed to lead, primarily from lead-based paint and dust in their homes. Lead poisoning can result in learning disabilities, kidney damage, behavioral problem, hyperactivity and increased aggression. The goal of the passed legislation is to prevent, identify and remedy lead hazards before any more children are exposed to lead poisoning. Peters is recommending that the City Attorney aggressively enforce these vital regulations.

Coffey withdraws from city attorney race

SAN DIEGO - Local attorney Dan Coffey announced Thursday he is withdrawing his candidacy for San Diego city attorney and endorsing City Council President Scott Peters.  Coffey said Peters "has demonstrated his ability to bring together groups divided on a topic, to heal the city's longstanding financial concerns born of decades of neglect and avoidance, and to stand strong in the face of numerous challenges to the city, both petty and great, external and internal alike."

SAN DIEGO – Scott Peters filed March 6th with the San Diego Registrar of Voters to appear on the June primary ballot. "Mike Aguirre has turned one of the most important offices in this city into a playground of politics, posturing and plain dysfunction," Peters said.  Peters has pledged to restore trust, professionalism and integrity to a beleaguered office that has seen the exodus of more than 100 lawyers during Aguirre's tenure.
