SAN DIEGO - Local attorney Dan Coffey announced Thursday he is withdrawing his candidacy for San Diego city attorney and endorsing City Council President Scott Peters.  Coffey said Peters "has demonstrated his ability to bring together groups divided on a topic, to heal the city's longstanding financial concerns born of decades of neglect and avoidance, and to stand strong in the face of numerous challenges to the city, both petty and great, external and internal alike."

Peters joined Coffey outside City Hall for the announcement.

Late last month, attorney Lee Burdick also suspended her bid for city attorney and endorsed Peters.

Besides Peters, the field in the race to unseat City Attorney Michael Aguirre, who is running for reelection, includes Councilman Brian Maienschein, Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith and attorney Amy Lepine.
