SAN DIEGO – Council President Scott Peters led the City Council to pass legislation to protect San Diego children from the harmful affects of lead poisoning. According to the Environmental Health Coalition, every month in San Diego 100 children are exposed to lead, primarily from lead-based paint and dust in their homes. Lead poisoning can result in learning disabilities, kidney damage, behavioral problem, hyperactivity and increased aggression. The goal of the passed legislation is to prevent, identify and remedy lead hazards before any more children are exposed to lead poisoning. Peters is recommending that the City Attorney aggressively enforce these vital regulations.
