San Diego Education Association President Camille Zombro endorsed San Diego City Council President Scott Peters for city attorney Friday, calling him a "leader who fights to do the right thing and for the right causes."

Zombro cited the fact that Peters wrote  to the governor urging against proposed school budget cuts,  even though schools are not within the city's purview.

"Others might have said, ‘School budgets  aren't up to us at the city,' or ‘It's not my job to engage in  this fight with the governor,' " she said. "But Scott's a  leader, and leaders fight to solve problems.

"I know Scott will bring this same  leadership to the city attorney's office and I am proud to  support him. I urge every San Diegan who cares about workers,  teachers and neighborhoods to support Scott Peters for city  attorney."

Dozens of women gathered near City Hall  to declare their support for Peters' candidacy.

Former state senator Dede Alpert, who  endorsed Peters, also announced that she will chair a group  called "Women for Scott for City Attorney." Its purpose is to  attract and mobilize women voters.

"It is important for women to not only  support women candidates, but to also support male candidates  who fight for the things that matter most to us: safe  neighborhoods, a clean environment, jobs, and equality and  respect for all," Alpert said. "And we should support the  person most qualified for the job. In this race, that person  is Scott Peters."

Alpert and Zombro were joined by Peters'  wife, Lynn, councilwoman Toni Atkins, labor leader Lorena  Gonzales and former city attorney candidate Lee Burdick.

Zombro has been a teacher for 14 years.  She worked for San Diego Unified School District at Baker  Elementary and Tierrasanta Elementary before being elected  president of the SDEA in 2006. SDEA's members include more  than 8,000 certificated employees including teachers, nurses,  counselors, librarians, substitutes and many  others.
