I decided to run for San Diego City Attorney to bring trust, professionalism and integrity back to the City Attorney's office.
When public servants do their jobs, and do them right, government can help solve problems. We can make our city safer. We can clean up our environment. We can attract high-paying jobs so families can keep the homes they might be struggling to afford.
We can balance our budget without breaking our pledge to protect kids and seniors. We can make progress on problems like traffic gridlock - by breaking through the political gridlock at City Hall.
After nearly eight years of public service, I know that government isn't the only answer.
But government shouldn't be a part of the problem either.
Elected officials must work together to make our city better. Elected officials must focus on sound policies - not silly politics.
Most of all - elected officials must be competent. They should have integrity. They must take responsibility for their actions and learn from their mistakes.
And they must be dedicated to putting your interests above their own self-interest.
I am proud to have a record that my colleagues and opponents would call experienced, competent and professional. And once elected, I will recruit experienced and ethical attorneys, and I will manage them professionally.
- I fought successfully to bring sound management back to San Diego. I helped build our new reform system of government - and as Council President, I know it inside and out. I've learned first-hand what can go wrong, and how to fix it.
- I spent 15 years in environmental law. I worked in the private sector in two international law firms and my own law firm. And I spent five years as a supervising attorney at the Office of the County Counsel, which is a model of efficiency and talent for a public law office.
- I am proud to have a record of problem-solving leadership that my colleagues and opponents would call experienced, competent and professional.
My accomplishments have not come about because I am the only person with the right answer. They are the result of listening and working with others -- with two mayors, 13 council members, 10,000 city employees and the public.
San Diego is a great city with an even greater future. But we need a top lawyer who shows respect for the law. I'll be that lawyer for you. I will be the kind of lawyer that works for this city - not against it. And I won't use the office to fight my political enemies - I will be a City Attorney who fights for you.
- If you care about creating a stronger economy, elect a City Attorney who will fight for jobs, not fight against his own client, our city.
- If you care about bringing fiscal sanity back to San Diego, elect a City Attorney with a proven track record of reform, not a proven history of petty politics.
- If you care about protecting our environment, elect a City Attorney who will fight polluters, not fight for the sake of fighting.
- And if you care about safeguarding our families, elect a City Attorney who will use the power of the office to address quality of life crimes and protect our families from fraud and abuse - not to further his own political agenda.
I to ask you to join our growing coalition, and our campaign to bring trust, professionalism and integrity back to the City Attorney's office. I can't wait to get to work. And with your help in the weeks and months ahead - I know I can win the right to serve you as City Attorney.
